Local Schools to Feature at Honley Show
Eight local schools are to feature in
the Countryside Marquee at Honley Show this year on June 10th
at the Farnley Tyas showground.
In a competition designed to demonstrate
that young children can use computers with great aplomb and to
emphasise that the countryside is important, children will be
designing and submitting posters which will be on display
throughout the day. The theme of the contest will be that
people of all ages and from every walk of life can
"make-a-difference" to our countryside.
Commenting on the initiative, one of the
show organisers, Richard Needham, remarked, "Our countryside
requires recognition and sympathetic understanding if we are
to nurture and preserve it for future generations. Perhaps
surprisingly, children understand this concept very well from
an early age and want to become involved. We hope that by
encouraging them to prepare posters on this theme for the show
they will become associated with an important topic on a long
term basis. Just as importantly in the short term, they will
be able to use their skills with computers in a constructive
and educational manner about a very real issue. We see this as
a rich curriculum experience where children can share
concepts, learn about an important topic and express
themselves in teams whilst retaining their individual flair,
ability and enthusiasm."
The total number of entries remains
unknown since several schools may submit multiple entries. All
will be on display in prominent positions and judged by Chris
Shaw of Pink Elephant PR, the show's PR Consultants. Winners
in three age categories will be declared with a rosette,
certificate and voucher for the designs considered to best
demonstrate the importance of the countryside and the need to
preserve it.
Richard Needham again, "We expect the
quality of entries to be very high and the judge will no doubt
have a difficult time assessing the eventual winners. Cut-off
date for entries is June 6th with all children submitting a
poster being awarded free entry into the show. If you want to
witness tomorrows star designers, come along to the show and
see what our local children are capable of."
